Walks, Hiking & Local Excursions
from the retreat

One of the most memorable parts of staying with us is stepping into the landscapes, stories, and traditions that surround the retreat.

All our walks and hikes are led by our expert local guides who grew up exploring these valleys, forests, and ridgelines. They’re here to share the hidden gems, cultural knowledge, and natural beauty that most visitors never get to see.

Whether you’re after sweeping views, cultural stories, or a slow stroll into town, there’s an adventure waiting for you just outside your door.

All of our guided walks cater to a range of abilities and begin right at the retreat’s doorstep. Best of all, every walk and expert guide is included complimentary with your stay.

Gangilonga Rock Hike

Gangilonga Rock is one of Iringa’s most iconic historical sites and it has an incredible story behind it. (Spoiler alert! If you want the full tale revealed by your guide on the day, you might want to skip the next sentence!)

Gangilonga Rock is a towering landmark deeply tied to the legacy of the Hehe (pronounced Hey-Hey) people and their fierce resistance against German troops. Chief Mkwawa used this massive rock as a strategic lookout, and legend says he could even “listen” to the rock for guidance that helped the Hehe win key battles.

Today, the rock stands as a symbol of bravery and identity for Iringa and its summit rewards you with sweeping, unforgettable views of the town. Check it out yourself and listen to the wisdom of the rock.

Walk to the Market

A gentle downhill walk into the community is a wonderful way to connect with local life and culture. The area is warm and welcoming, making it easy to feel part of this friendly neighbourhood.

As you wander, you’ll find vibrant markets filled with incredible fresh fruits and vegetables you can bring back to the retreat for our private chef to turn into something delicious or simply enjoy as a snack while you explore.

Don’t miss the spice market, where the air is filled with rich aromas. Many of the spices come freshly from Zanzibar and surrounding regions.

You’ll also pass through the Maasai market, where everything is handmade — from bags, books, and keychains to sculptures and even Tanzanian football jerseys. It’s the perfect place to pick up unique gifts or souvenirs.

When you’re ready to return, you can either enjoy the scenic walk back or hop into a bajaj (a tuk-tuk-style ride) that will drop you right at the retreat’s door.

The Bush Hike

Wander through the beautiful Nature Reserve with one of our expert guides and discover the traditional medicinal plants and trees used in ancient Maasai practices.

Along the way, enjoy stunning views back towards the retreat (perfect for photos) and experience the peaceful sounds as you delve deeper into The Great Ruaha Valley.

The Secret Church Hike

Our guides know all the hidden paths, and one of the most special leads to a secluded old church perched on a valley ledge opposite the retreat. This little church is known only to locals and is used exclusively on Christmas and Easter.

It’s peaceful, charming, and beautifully untouched. Walking there feels like stepping back in time. A perfect hike for those who love local secrets and quiet, meaningful places.
