Here at Origins Africa Retreat, we’ve built our hospitality approach around the idea of connection with people and with place. Instead of running like a hotel, we use a chalet host model, similar to those in ski lodges, where a small team looks after guests throughout their stay.
One important benefit is that this puts you very much in control of your balance between privacy and interaction with the community: Whether you want to be sharing stories around the fire with us, or left to relax undisturbed, it’s up to you.
The hosts are all local community members who we’ve trained on-site, and pay fairly for their work. This setup creates steady jobs, builds skills, and ensures that money directly supports the local economy rather than going elsewhere.
The same few hosts handle every aspect of our guests’ experience. They clean rooms, help the private chef in the kitchen, take guests to the market or other local excursions, and make sure drinks or snacks are available when needed.
Because there aren’t lots of different staff members rotating in and out, guests spend time with the same people each day and naturally build a relationship with them. The service ends up being personal and relaxed.
Over a stay, the hosts get to know what each guest likes and how they prefer things to be done, often anticipating small details without needing to be asked. It’s a simple model, but it works.
Our approach creates a setting where hospitality feels natural and genuine, and where the community benefits just as much as the visitors do.
